The stone-carving custom in India is one of the richest and oldest in the world. This art has flourished here since the 7th century B.C. Stone carving in West Bengal is primarily practised in local Hills at Bankura district. The easy availability of raw materials from the quarry in the hills has facilitated the craft for long. The artisans of this region diversified their art to design figures of Hindu deities as well as other artistic figures in the last 50 years. Stone carving has been a common profession for the people of this area as stone was abundantly available at local hills. However, the stone carvers of this region are facing a grave challenge these days as the Government has imposed a ban on quarrying in the hills. Now the artisans have to buy pink stone imported from Keonjhar district of Orissa. This adds more difficulty to their livelihood. The cost of carrying the stones from Orissa to a distant place like Bankura district of West Bengal has become economically unviable. Day by day, many stone carving artisans are leaving this craft and going to other places in search of other jobs.
